The Western Sport Special Challenger T/A |
| How do I start this page?? Well this is a topic that from time to time has come up and seems to be a hotly contested debate of "Is it real or not" well it is a REAL T/A and it has every option on it a Western Sport Special is supposed to have. This particular T/A was owned at one time by a friend of mine and even though at the time I wasn't into the E-Bodies like I am now I do remember the car and he knew the car was something special and managed to take as many pictures of it as he thought were needed. Some of them as you will see did not turn out too well and a few of them were not really worth while posting even though they were supposed to show the unique options the car had. I will try and break down the info that is commonly known about these cars and hopefully have a few other Western Sport Special cars to show as well. I hope you enjoy this page!!! |
Here is the basic option breakdown for the WSS
As most of the other web sites have stated here is what the option package was supposed to include.
A91-Is the code for Challengers in 1970 only
It included a "Western Sport Special" Decal-Vinyl Roof-Wood Grained Instrument Panel Appliqué-Remote Control Mirror-Rim Blow Steering Wheel-Sill-Belt & Cowl Moldings-Front Splash Pan Scoop- F78X14 White Side Wall Tires-Rear Astrotone Painted Appliqué (Argent Painted Tail Panel)-Pedal Dress Up-Bumper Guards Front and Rear Rubber Inserts and Rallye Wheels.
Now this was available on Challenger hardtops only...or was it?????
Here are a few pix of the controversial WSS T/A in question. The pix I have are from one of the original owners when he bought the car in the mid to late 80's. The car is now rumored to be in the mid west somewhere and he has since lost track of the car. I am hoping some owners of these cars will see this page and contact myself or Barry Washington at the Challenger T/A Registry so we can get more info on all the WSS Challengers out there.
| Ok after posting this page I received emails asking on the authenticity of the car and to show a broadcast sheet or fender tag options. This car is listed on the T/A Vin List to the right you will see a column and in that column you will see WSS. The car as you can tell in some of these pictures has all its original paint on it as well. My friend who use to own the car said that every part and option on this car is exactly how it is when he found the car in NY. The originality of the shows and these pix were taken back in the mid 80's so who back then would have "made" or duplicated a car??? The simple fact is this car had all the options on it from day one!!!! Questions
will always be When-Why-Who-Where!!! UPDATE!!!! FOUND ONCE AGAIN!!!!!! It took some time but the Western Special T/A has been found once again. Here are some updated pix I took. Car is not For Sale at this time but owner left door open in the future. As you can see by the pix he really cares about this car!!!!!!

Yes that's right it was literally buried in the snow in upstate New York and after digging it out it was loaded on the trailer for a long ride back. |

After getting it home it was washed off and he took these pix to show the spoiler decals. Of note look how weathered they are. look original to me. |

This row of pix show the 6 way seat. The red letters on the door lock levers a basic interior shot. The rear defrost set up and the unique but odd cigarette lighter mounted in the trunk area. And last but not least you get the general idea of just how much the owner cares for this car by simply looking at the pic!!!!! |
| Here
are a few other links that had pix and or interpretations on the WSS
Challengers and one or two give mention to the Darts also.
http://home.earthlink.net/~challengerworld/70info.html http://www.southernmopar.org/SMAguestbook.html And the last link is from Ken Bowsers site. He was the only one I saw that had pix someone else took of the car at a local car show until I emailed him one. He too had his own take on the car and is the only one who came the closest to exactly what was right. http://www.aarta.com/frame.html Nice title for the page too!!!!
